The Joan Special: Season 7 Part 2

23 Jun

For Part 1, look here.

Her Garden Party Dress

Joan pink dress Season 7

The promo shots for Part 2 featured Joan looking sensational in this floaty pink dress. It’s very Diane von Furstenberg and very flattering with its wide scoop neckline, full-length sleeves and fitted waist.

Her SATC Look

Joan Mad Men magenta

This magenta power dress and gold coat remind me of another kickass businesswoman, Samantha Jones.

Subdued In Sludge Green

Joan Mad Men paisley

After being sexually harassed by a couple of sleazeball clients, Joan is wearing a modest, and ugly, blouse.

Her Retail Therapy Fix

Joan Mad Men pearl dress

Joan on a shopping spree is the stuff of my fashion fantasies. This pearl encrusted, feather trimmed evening dress is exquisite.

Of Course Joan Wears A Ballgown To Bed

Joan Mad Men nightgown

You gotta love a nightie that comes with its own cape.

Her Office Barbie Look

Joan Mad Men pink outfit

Gorgeous, summer workwear. I’m obsessed with these shades of pink. The nude accessories keep it chic.

Yet More Glamorous Sleepwear

Joan Mad Men green dressing gown

Costume designer, Janie Bryant, is spoiling us. This satin emerald dressing gown is fit for a queen. Or me.

Her Beautiful Blue Blouse

Joan Mad Men turquoise blouse

Joan wears quite a few pussybow necklines this season, a big trend in women’s officewear at the time.

One Of Her All Time Greatest Hits

Joan bombshell

She’s always loved Asian style and this brocade pencil dress with its Mandarin collar is just stunning. A classic bombshell look.

Experimenting With Skirt Shapes

Joan Mad Men polka dot blouse

Joan’s famous for her wiggle skirts but here she is something more flared. She keeps her waist defined by wearing the belt over the top of her shirt.

Her Mixed Print Dress

Joan flouncy dress

This season sees Joan really venturing out of her familiar silhouette with floaty, printed numbers like this one.

Her Matchy Matchy Suit

Joan Mad Men geometric

She looks like a flight attendant on the world’s most colour-coordinated airline.

The “I’ll Take One In Every Colour” Outfit

Joan Mad Men turquoise outfit

Joan has long been a fan of buying several versions of the same outfit in different colourways. If a look works for you, make it work harder.

Her Sassy Seventies Frock

Joan Mad Men funky dress

She’s got the funk.

Her Giant Pink Dress

Joan Mad Men pussybow dress

Another pussybow neckline. It’s a bit billowy for my taste – I prefer her in something more fitted.

Like This

Her Tux Dress

It’s menswear inspired but in a very feminine way. A fabulous look for the office.

What To Wear To The Beach

A vintage floral one-piece and a sarong knotted at the waist. Check out the diva-sized brim on that sunhat behind her.

Her Fancy Dinner Dress

J’adore this fitted, jersey dress and matching handbag. Sophisticated glamour.

Her Hot Mama Look

Joan casual

Cute and casual at home in a batwing-sleeved jumper and cats eye glasses.

And Now For Something Completely Different

It’s the end of Mad Men and suddenly Joan’s really into jumpsuits!

This dressing gown is fierce and I want it.

Her Farewell Ensemble

Joan is The Boss – of her own company and of this look.

The Joan Special: Season 7 Part 1

2 Jun

Since the last ever episode of Mad Men, I’ve been weeping in my wiggle dress and mourning the loss of Joan’s magnificent beehive. I’ve also been documenting every one of Joanie’s looks from her style swan song, Season 7. I find it eases the pain.

Her Go-going Places Look

Joan pink minidress

The promos for Season 7 featured Joan in a sexy hot pink minidress. This is a brand new, forward-thinking shape for the empress of the office. I want her Pucci handbag, her legs and her first class plane ticket.

Joan, Version 7.0

Joan Mad Men purple dress

The season premiere kicks off with a new spin on the quintessential Joan look – a jewel-toned pencil dress worn with a stonking great bouffant and a necklace that dangles down to her sensational bosom. The hemline and the hairdo have both crept up because we’ve entered the seventies.

Her Power Dress

Joan Mad Men business dress

Now she’s a big shot business lady, Joan wears monochrome and shows off her serious side. She drapes herself in gold to symbolise that she is a queen and that she is loaded.

Her Back To School Look

Joan autumnal

The colours in this ensemble are as rich and fabulous as Joan. She looks like an earth goddess.

Professionally Gorgeous

Joan purple suit

A masterclass in stylish workwear. I love the bold, feminine colour, the 3/4-length sleeves and the belted jacket that keeps her hourglass silhouette on display.

Her Valentines Day Tribute Act

Joan red

Joan loves a theme. The theme is mostly “drop dead gorgeous”. However, her V-Day get up is more of a deep cranberry than a bright red as she’s not feeling all that loved up right now.

Her Knockout Knee-Highs

Joan Mad Men boots

I gasped when I saw these knee-high boots, an exciting fashion first for Joan signifying how kickass and modern she has become. The gasping was not a first for me. I get very emotionally involved with Joan’s wardrobe.

Her Green Is The Colour Of Money Look

Joan Mad Men green outfit

Seventies Joan has kept her trademark pencil skirt but added a big flouncy blouse. And even after all these years, she’s still tying a scarf to her handbag.

Her Angry Red Dress

Joan Mad Men red dress

If you plan on getting majorly pissed off, it’s best to wear a beautiful red dress to coordinate with your rage.

Her At Home With Joan Dress

Joan Mad Men floaty dress

Isn’t it awkward when your closeted gay friend leans in for a snog and a marriage proposal? And don’t you love it when we get to see Joan at home? She looks so much softer than in her office armour with her hair all Farrah Fawcett flicky and her dress all polka dot floaty.

Her Summer In The Office Dress

Joan Mad Men red summery dress

The psychadelic print brings her favourite pencil dress shape bang into the seventies.

Her Just Got Out Of Bed Look

Joan Mad Men casual

She’s been called out in the middle of the night so this is the most casual we’ve seen her all season. I love her spotty rainmac and the fact that, whatever the circumstances, Joan’s wearing heels.

Her Scarf Dress

Joan scarf dress

Scarves are Joan’s signature flourish, finishing off dresses and handbags alike. This navy frock is pretty conservative but that printed scarf at the neckline gives it panache.

For more Joan, go to Part 2 of this fashion extravaganza.

Another Day, Another Joan Dress

11 Apr

Roxy Vintage Style Heart My Closet pink pencil dress

Dress is custom made by Heart My Closet, handbag and earrings are vintage, scarf is Wheels & Dollbaby, shoes are Aldo

This dress is a Mad Men mash up inspired by two of my favourite frocks from the show, one predictably worn by Joan and the other by the always fabulous Megan. I fell in love with the pink palette of Megan’s shift but knew that the shape would make me look middle-aged and bingo-winged. So I asked my favourite online dressmaker, Heart My Closet, to use the same colours but in the style of Joan’s sky blue office dress.

Mad Men dress inspiration

I’ve raved about Heart My Closet before. The American website will custom make you a vintage style dress to fulfill all your Mad Men fantasies, except the one where Don Draper seduces you over cocktails.

I love having dresses tailor made to fit my apparently freakishly proportioned body. If you’ve never had a dress made for you, me and my freak-bod highly recommend it, especially if you’re not one of the six women in the world who actually have the same measurements as shop-bought clothes.

As Season 7 of Mad Men is about to start, here’s Christina Joaning it up for a promo shot. She’s wearing a shockingly short skirt for the queen of the pencil. Does this mean in the new series she’ll be all babydolls and minis? What’s next? Go-go boots? Actually, I’d love to see that. How sassy would go-go Joan be?!

My 1960s Baby Beehive

3 Mar

Roxy Vintage Style beehive

Dress from Stop Staring, cardigan from Krisp, shoes from Aldo, vintage earrings

One of my New Year Resolutions is to make the beehive my bitch. I’m starting slowly (really slowly, we’re now in March) with a dayhive, which I achieved through old-fashioned backcombing and modern YouTube tutorial watching.

With my hair in this bouffant I feel like a 1960s secretary out on the town, taking the world on with the combined power of my hive, my sass and my shorthand.

It turns out teasing your hair is an intensive workout for your upper arms. Mine were so knackered I couldn’t even hold my vintage handbag for the photos. On the bright side if I combine regular backcombing sessions with my two other favourite forms of exercise – walking in heels and dancing round my bedroom – I’ll be bikini ready in no time.

All About Joan

3 Jul

It’s not a girl crush. It’s a one woman obsession, revolving mainly around her wardrobe. Season 6 of Mad Men gave us lots of fabulous Joanie moments and a few worrying ones too. Here’s an outfit by outfit account on what Joan wore in 1968.

Her photo shoot look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple waistcoat

The series premiere features Joan in a waistcoat suit and frilly shirt. I am not amused. In fact I’m terrified. Double breastedness inflates breasts that are already huge, the blouse looks like seventies fancy dress and it’s not even a pencil skirt, it’s an A-line. From a storytelling perspective, I get what costume sorceress Janie Bryant is doing. The outfit is about Joan’s new position as a partner. It’s more authoritative and menswear-inspired than her usual sheath dresses and the symbolically secretarial gold pen necklace has gone for good. From a fan’s perspective though, this is the first outfit I’ve ever seen Joan in that I have no desire to wear.

Her air hostess look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 air hostess

And this is the second. When odious Herb visits her office, Joan is wearing a navy tabard and a fussy orange blouse. This is a much looser silhouette than we’re used to on Joan and, dare I say it, she looks a tad frumpy. She’s even wearing her glasses on a chain round her neck like a middle-aged school marm. Janie, what the heck have you done to Joanie??

Her career woman dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 navy wool dress

This is more like it. Joan’s navy boiled wool dress and matching coat look expensive and chic. To her friend, Kate, she appears awe-inspiringly successful, even if her coworkers still treat her like a secretary/whore.

Her day-to-night dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 blue dress

This watercolour silk chiffon dress is a much softer look. The frock is flouncily old-fashioned but she still looks beautiful. I have to include a picture of her perfectly coordinating coat, which we get a glimpse of in the taxi.

Joan Mad Men coat

Her serious suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 black suit

This is what Joan wears when she knows she has a challenging meeting that day. I love the leopard print scarf she’s tied to her handbag. Even when she’s being sombre, she still finds a way to showcase her Joanie flair.

Her awards ceremony gown

Joan Mad Men Season 6 goddess gown

“This is a Greek goddess vintage gown, and I always think of Joan as being a goddess,” explains Janie. This outfit really reminds me of the old school Hollywood glamour of Elizabeth Taylor. I love the chandelier earrings, the lavish beading and the gorgeous jewel colour. She looks sensational.

Her sympathetic vestdress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 brown tabard

I’m not at all convinced by Joan’s new tabard fetish, but at least this one’s not double breasted.

Her weekend office wear

Joan Mad Men Season 6 floral shirt

This is what she wears for a Saturday meeting. The brown pencil skirt and printed silk blouse are a more relaxed version of her usual office attire. Her hair reminds me of Farrah Fawcett’s 70s flicks – for once, Joan is ahead of the trends!

Her girly dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 acorn dress

A repeat from last season, this dress is extra feminine with its adorable acorn print and the cute little red bows on the trim.

Her outraged dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 teal dress

In one of her most emotional scenes ever, Joan wears this teal shirtdress. The colour and shape are strong and almost workmanlike but it also has a secretarial feel to it, reflecting her vulnerability. It’s a fashion callback to the dress she wore when she was made partner, reminding us of what she’s been through to get to this point.

Joan Mad Men teal dress

Her  getting things sorted suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 blue suit

This royal blue crepe suit is appropriately assertive for a scene where she’s organising everyone in the office. The paisley blouse and butterfly brooch are on trend for the 1968 hippy look. Although the hippies probably wouldn’t have teamed their boho accessories with a business suit.

Her queasy look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green coat

Her coat is an appropriately sickly shade of green. Note how the electric blue shoes are the exact same shade as her suit. Joan is always perfectly coordinated, even in A&E.

Her ill at home look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 kimono

We’ve seen this kimono before. It’s her emergency dressing gown whether she’s nursing her kid or herself.

Her tough decisions suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green waistcoat

A vest suit and a fussy blouse. This look encapsulates all my least favourite aspects of Joan’s style this season.

Her summer office outfit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple dress

But this stunning ensemble totally makes up for it. Although it looks like a dress, this is actually a two-piece. The strong cardinal purple is classic Joan. She nearly always wears solid jewel tones that reflect her strength and ensure she stands out onscreen.

Her beach look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 beach look

Love love love Joan’s casual seaside look. It’s very nautically themed, right down to the anchor print drawstring bag and the patriotic scarf in her hair. “This is so what Joan would wear to the beach,” says Janie. “It’s knitwear and shapely and sexy. Then, I designed and built her capri pants. She wore espadrilles. You can’t see it, but she had a very sexy one-piece bathing suit underneath.” I just wish we’d got to see Joan rocking her swimsuit.

Her “I went to the beach yesterday” look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 tropical suit

The tropical pattern on this vintage suit reminds Roger that she spent yesterday at the beach with another man. The colours are stunning, especially with Joan’s rosy sun-kissed complexion.

Her lunch date dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 date dress

This is an unusual office look for Joan because she thinks she’s going on a date. The pale floral chiffon and that great big ruffle at her shoulder make her look extra romantic and feminine.

Her favourite PJs

Joan Mad Men Season 6 PJs

We’ve seen Joan in these stripey pyjamas loads of times when she’s home alone. I really enjoy the way they repeat outfits for the characters on Mad Men because it makes them seem so much more realistic.

Her Avon suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 Avon suit

This is classic Joan remixed for an important meeting. It’s got her hallmarks of a solid colour and an hourglass silhouette, but it’s a suit so it looks more professional. She even has a slimline briefcase which matches her handbag exactly. Love this look.

 Her aftermath dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 navy bow dress

This block colour dress is a callback to her days as a secretary, making it a great choice for the scene where Pete tells her off. She wouldn’t have looked anywhere near as vulnerable in a power suit.

Her standout suit dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 strawberry suit

Janie redesigned this vintage suit and altered its fit and detailing. She added the neck scarf, which has been a Joan trademark since the beginning. “Men love scarves” is one of her fundamental rules of dressing.

Her purple power suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple suit

We only get to see this suit for a moment but I really like it – the colour, the fit, the femininity. As the season goes on Joan seems to get the hang of dressing the part of the successful business woman without losing her unique style and personality.

Her autumnal office wear

Joan Mad Men Season 6 fall

Another themed outfit. It’s Thanksgiving so she’s in a vintage pumpkin blouse and a burnt orange pencil skirt. No detail is overlooked here – the bow on the gift from Bob even matches her green and gold charm bracelet.

Her femme fatale look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 leopard blouse

One of my all-time favourite Joanie moments. I’m pining for this pussybow leopard print blouse. This outfit reminds me of the episode in Season 1 when she’s getting ready for a night on the town with her roommate and she’s feeling too Doris Day. “What I want to be is Kim Novak in just about anything.”

Kim Novak leopard print

Mission accomplished.

Her Thanksgiving dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green dress

This gorgeous forest green dress continues the autumnal colour scheme of the final episode. It’s a much more relaxed silhouette for Joan, whose clothes usually hug her tightly, and her hair is loose. She still looks strong and feminine but more natural – an earthy goddess rather than a constructed one. Always a fan of a themed look, Joan’s finished off her Thanksgiving look with a giant box of cranberry sauce. On that note, I would like to give thanks for Joanie’s amazing wardrobe.

What was your favourite Joan look this season?

Mad Men Season 6: Fashion Porn

27 Jun

As another series of Mad Men draws to a close, it’s time to look back at the clothes and sigh.

Standing out in paradise

Megan Hawaii costumes Mad Men

Megan’s Hawaii holiday wardrobe is phenomenal. She’s a vision in multicoloured Pucci-esque prints. String bikinis, maxi dresses and kaftans are accessorised with flowers in her hair and an adorable lilac sun hat. She looks tanned, bohemian and beautiful. An artistic free spirit with a massive bank balance.

Megan in Hawaii Mad Men costumes

Couture makeover

Megan soapstar Mad Men

Costume designer/alchemist Janie Bryant says Megan is, “more glamorous than ever because she’s a soap-opera star”. She’s a high fashion girl about town with big earrings and bigger hair. Her gold Barbarella-style micro-minidress and her coral lamé number are particularly fetching. The late sixties suit Megan’s face and figure perfectly.

Megan season 6 Mad Men

Adventures in facial hair

Harry sideburns Mad Men 6

Harry Crane’s sideburns were a hoot. Equally entertaining was Stan’s beard, now bushy enough to stash his spliffs at work.

Stan and Ginsberg Mad Men Season 6

All the men except Don start looking groovier as we approach the seventies. Janie confirms, “the ties are bigger, the colours are louder”.

Betty’s weight watcher wardrobe

Mad Men season 6 Betty

I love seeing Betty adapt her “incredible closet” to fit her new body shape. She retains her polished, feminine aesthetic although her outfits are frumpier than when she was Don’s trophy wife. Betty still has a fondness for bows, flounces and child rape jokes.

Betty season 6 rape joke

Oh Bets, you adorably dressed creepy bitch.

If I was the writer of Mad Men, first I would rename it ‘All About Joan’. Then I would have Betty pay our Joanie a visit to borrow some of her curve-celebrating dresses. At the end of a lengthy makeover montage to a soundtrack of The Supremes, they would eat cake, before hitting a fabulous Manhattan cocktail bar and shimmying all night long.

One hot mama

Mad Men season 6 Betty

When Betty gets her mojo back, she celebrates by wearing a fabulous bejewelled yellow evening gown. She looks great. She knows it, sleazy politician guy knows it, and Henry always knew it – bless him. Her casual look is just as bewitching. Love these denim shorts. As does the petrol station attendant.

No more schoolgirl chic for Pegs

Peggy Mad Men workwear

Notice how much her work wardrobe has changed since we first met her. Now she commands authority in stronger colours, striking prints and more expensive fabrics.

strong Peggy Mad Men 6

In the final episode she wears trousers in the office for the first time. Her kickass tartan pantsuit totally symbolises how far she’s come.

Peggy on the pull

Mad Men 6 sexy Peggy

This is a very different Peggy. I thought this was lingerie at first. It’s one of the skimpiest outfits we’ve seen in six seasons of MM. Hello legs, hello cleavage, hello sixties sex kitten.

Secretary style

Scarlet and Dawn

Scarlet is sassy and bright, even when she’s being fired. I love that she wears gogo boots to the office. By contrast, Dawn’s clothes look homemade. She doesn’t want to risk looking like those harlots in church, after all.

Clara and Meredith

Clara is fashion forward in her stripey waistcoat and matching skirt. And Meredith always wears baby clothes. This was a huge trend in the late sixties. Her oversized bows, dolly dresses and cartoony bouffant make her stand out hilariously in her scenes with Joan.

The other woman

Sylvia Mad Men Season 6

Stuck in the fifties, Sylvia’s classic appearance is the counterpoint to Megan’s youthful, daring style. I do covet some of Sylvia’s outfits though. I would wear the hell out of both of these dresses.

Everything Joan wears

Joan will have her own post because I’m obsessed. Until then, here’s a little taster to tide you over.

Five Of The Best Mad Men Fashion Moments

6 Apr

The scenes where costume and plot collaborate to devastating effect.

Spoiler alert – if you haven’t watched up to the end of Season 5, for goodness sake, stop reading this and go and catch up before Season 6 starts!

1.

Betty Pretzel Mad MenIs that a pretzel on your head or are you just that fabulous? Totally sixties and totally sexy. Betty and Don are getting a little holiday role-play action and pretending they don’t know each other. This certainly isn’t the Betty we know. We’re used to seeing her as the immaculately put-together housewife, a suburban Grace Kelly. Betty never wears black, she’s all about icy pastels. But here, sipping a cocktail in a piazza in Rome, she is a high fashion sex kitten. Miaow.

2.

Joan cocktail dress at workOh Joanie. Scared she’s going to lose her job at SCDP after having Roger’s lovechild, she pays a visit to the office. To make sure they don’t forget about her she wears a party dress in printed silk and a shade of pink so shocking it’s almost garish. You can see a bit of her cleavage, which never happens at work. Add the baby in the giant pram and you can’t miss her. The effect is a little desperate but she still looks sassy and she still totally rules that office.

3.

Sexy PeggyPeggy’s on parade! No tartan? No mustard? No high-neck blouses and lipstick on her teeth? Following Joan’s advice, “If you want to be taken seriously, stop dressing like a little girl,” Peggy gets sexy. This dress is nothing like anything we’ve ever seen her in. Low-cut, sleeveless and bejeweled, she fits right in at the swanky gentleman’s club.

4.

Trudy pregnant

I just love this. I laughed out loud the first time I saw Trudy in her maternity sleepwear. She looks perfect. So pink, so frothy, such a nesting homemaker. She’s finally getting the baby she’s wanted since the first season and to celebrate she’s put on a christening gown.

5.

Megan Zou Bisou Bisou    When Megan performs French pop song, ‘Zou Bisou Bisou’, at Don’s surprise party, she is the epitome of a 1960s sex symbol. Her dress, a restored vintage original, has the shortest skirt we’ve seen on the show, especially when she lifts it to reveal more fishnetted thigh. This costume shows that she’s more daring and fashion forward than the other characters. She is not just going to do as Don says. She has a mind of her own and is full of youthful energy and sex appeal.

And here’s a little Mad Men snack to keep you going till Season 6.
