Vintage Essentials No.3: The Perfect Red Lipstick

29 Sep

Gwyneth Paltrow in red lipstick“Beauty to me is about being comfortable in your own skin, that or a kick-ass red lipstick.” Gwyneth Paltrow

Red lipstick signifies vintage glamour, confidence and va va voom. I wear it almost every day and love having a signature lip colour.

I believe in making the most of your assets and my lips are the only body part I’m happy with. As a show off, I like to draw as much attention to them as possible through a combination of daubing them scarlet and pouting at all times. Without my red lippy I feel plain but with it I feel ready to take on the world.

I’ve spent many an hour at the beauty counter in Boots and I have vanity cases overflowing with assorted red lipsticks to show for it. These are three of my favourites.

No. 22 by Kate Moss for Rimmel

Red Kate Moss RimmelI first bought this as an emergency replacement when I accidentally left my lippy at home. It was a panic buy and I was highly stressed about the fading vibrancy of my lips. Who would have thought this bargain purchase would become my go-to everyday shade?

Worn by Paloma Faith and Madonna, this is an essential item in any vintage girl’s make-up bag. It’s a seriously sexy, retro red. I wear it for a dramatic look and love it in winter.

Cherries In The Snow by Revlon

This deep pinky red has been popular for decades and is one of the colours used on Christina Hendricks on Mad Men. I reach for it when I want a girlier vintage vibe.

Top Tips For Red Hot Lips

Exactly which shade of red suits you best depends on your individual colouring. Harry Meret, the famous Hollywood make-up director in the 1950s, advised, “Never select your lipstick because the colour looked well on someone else.” Try before you buy and if it makes you look yellow of teeth or knackered of face, wipe it off before anyone sees and for god’s sake don’t get it.

To pull off a colour as eye-catching as red, your lips need to be in the best possible condition. Use your toothbrush to gently exfoliate them and keep Vaseline or stylishly packaged lip balm handy to cheer you up when you’re chafing.

If you want a perfectly shaped pout, use lipliner before your lipstick. It will define the outline, prevent any colour bleeding and help your lipstick to last longer.

When applying red lipstick, build up colour and intensity gradually. Blot with a tissue after each layer for maximum staying power.

Stray lipstick on your teeth will shatter the glamourpuss effect instantly, so when you’ve finished applying try this saucy trick. Pop your finger in your mouth and pull it out slowly to collect any excess lippy. If you do this in front of people they may think you’re propositioning them. Use this information as you wish.

Don’t become so obsessed with your incredible lips that you forget the rest of your face. Red spots may match your lipstick but they also pull focus so cover the blighters up. Make your complexion as flawless as possible so your god-damn gorgeous pout can take centre stage.

Vintage Stars And Their Red Lipstick Secrets

Bette Davis

Bette Davies was a lipstick lover and said, “Even when I’m at home alone, I wear my lipstick. I feel naked without it.” Bette, I relate. Her preferred shade was known as Whorehouse Red.

Joan Crawford

Joan Crawford’s trademark lipstick look was known as “the Smear” as it went outside her natural lip line to make her lips look massive. She was way ahead of the trout pout trend. Critics described the effect as “labial flamboyancy” and “like balloon tyres in wet weather”. As you can see, Joan often put her hands over her ears to block out these criticisms.

Keep on pouting! Mwah! xx

The Collectif Regina Hawaiian Party Dress

A while ago I went to a Hawaiian themed party. While my friends fretted about what to wear, I knew I had everything I needed already in my overstuffed wardrobe. I’m a huge fan of fifties style tiki dresses so I had several on hand for this particular luau.

I decided on my Regina Hibiscus dress from Collectif. It’s a brilliantly designed party dress because it can be worn by all shapes and sizes. A gorgeous and very streamlined friend of mine has the same frock and it looks stunning on her size 6 figure. Thankfully it also flatters curvy girls like me with its black background and fitted hourglass shape.

The stetchy fabric makes it comfy and easy to move about in but it’s still supportive. I found it looked best on me in a figure-skimming size 10 worn without a bra. It was a relief not having to worry about my bra straps showing, although the increased probability of accidentally flashing a nip was slightly stressful. It’s a testament to the dress that despite countless cocktails and lots of dancefloor wiggling, both nips stayed covered.

To my inner exhibitionist’s delight there was a photo booth at the party. Naturally I seized the opportunity to experiment with accessories and practice my surprised face.

Last week I went to a swanky black tie event. Naturally I was excited, and not just because of the free-flowing bubbly. I relish any opportunity to spend an evening with one of my beloved party dresses.

Still bronzed from my Spanish jaunt, I went for continental glamour in a white and red rose 1950s style cocktail dress.

It’s from the appropriately named Pretty Dress Company, which is one of my favourite websites for party frocks and smart day dresses. Their designs are just so feminine and sexy.

I do find a lot of their dresses, including this one, look better on me without a giant bra obstructing the view. Luckily the fabric they use is strong enough to keep even my oversized babylons in place. This is particularly impressive as each of my breasts weighs more than a newborn baby. I raised the neckline slightly to make the dress more sophisticated and to encourage people to talk to my face.

It didn’t work.

Diary Of A Vintage Holiday Wardrobe

10 Sep

I’m not a light packer. I always pay for extra baggage and, as goes the story of my life, I’m still overweight. My justification for the bursting suitcase seams and (this year) broken handles is that my summer holiday is my annual chance to actually wear my extensive vintage swimsuit collection. Here’s a look by look account of what I wore on my recent holiday to Spain.

First Night Out

Feeling a bit of a post-flight porker, I adopted a tried and tested outfit formula. LBD + heels + a colour pop accessory = flattering, fast-track glamour.

The next day I craved colour and kitsch to get me in the holiday mood and distract me from my stonking hangover.

I couldn’t resist the sunniness of this sundress. It’s ideal for holidays because it’s bright, playful and the swing skirt stops your thighs getting all sweaty.

En route to the beach/pool/garden, I like to wear my one-piece swimsuit as a halter top. I also love a theme and this look was inspired by 1950s Spanish film stars.

During my holiday I became completely addicted to this fuschia orchid hairclip from Violets In May. It was a quick, fun way to add pin up appeal to all my outfits.

This is the first vintage style swimsuit I ever bought. It’s very special to me because it put a permanent stop to years of bikini body shame.

I wore white because it showed off my tan and polka dots because I’m obsessed.

Ah, my failsafe fifties swimsuit. Even when I’m feeling massive after using my holiday as an excuse to pig out, I still feel good in it. It’s very supportive.

Last Day Lunch

I went mid-century Mediterranen for my final day in Spain. My hours of hard work lazing around in the sunshine had paid off and I felt proud to have realised my dream of being as tanned as Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra.
