Vintage At Volupté Lounge

29 Jul

Roxy Vintage Style 1950s vintage Hawaiian pink wiggle dress

Last week my beautiful friend Lela and I went to Baby Grand Burlesque at London’s Volupté Lounge, a decadent cabaret bar which looks something like this.

Volupte

We looked a lot like this.

Baby Grand Burlesque double selfie

After we’d finished staring at ourselves in the mirror we settled down to enjoy the show. As well as sassy songbirds and ladies talented in the art of the tassel twirl, there was a three-course meal to devour. I felt a bit rude tucking into my food while performers were baring their souls and other body parts for my entertainment. But then I suppose a basement dedicated solely to erotic striptease is quite rude already. I was probably just feeling extra ladylike because I was so colour coordinated.

Baby Grand Burlesque Lela and Roxy

A night at the burlesque is the perfect excuse to get all glammed up in your vintage finery. The ladies onstage wear bejewelled thongs and sequins on their nipples, so anything goes. It’s fun to give at least a nod to old fashioned glamour. I, of course, prefer to give a full on parade.

I wore an original 1950s Hawaiian wiggle dress, which is only one of my all time best vintage finds ever. This dress feels like it was made for me. The colours, the cut and the measurements are all absolutely perfect for my taste and figure. Continuing the whole mid-century luau vibe, I accessorised with a vintage bamboo box-bag and a corsage in exactly the same shade of fuchsia as the flowers on my frock.

We had a wonderful evening and thoroughly enjoyed the performances, the cocktails and the chance to get dressed up to the nines on a schoolnight.

Pin Up Accessories For Summer

25 Jul

Gil Elvgren

So you’ve got your favourite 1950s sundress on but you still don’t feel pin up perfect? No need to worry, doll. Just read this easy guide to summer accessorising, vintage style.

Statement Sunglasses

Cat eye sunglasses are the most iconic fifties shape. You can channel the Pink Ladies in these supergirly shades from Deadly Is The Female. Or if, like me, you’re worried that cat eyes don’t suit your human features, look for oversized frames like this selection from Bow And Crossbones. I love them because they’re very old Hollywood glam plus they conveniently minimise the visible surface area of my big round face.

Cat eye sunglasses

Basket Bags

This classic but quirky style will go with all your summer outfits. Mine is vintage but there are lots of adorable reproductions I’m lusting after online. The boxier baskets are from Miss Bamboo and Deadly Is The Female and these cute little clutches can be found at Collectif and Bow And Crossbones.

Tiki Jewelery

Make your life more like a luau with some fabulous jewellery. Either bedeck yourself with bamboo bangles or, if you want to really kitsch it up, check out these awesome novelty earrings from Lady Luck’s Boutique.

Colourful Corsages

I am currently obsessed with corsages and summer is a brilliant excuse to bring the party to your hair. Even if you lack the time or hand-eye coordination to commit to a full on vintage ‘do, wearing one of these is an easy way to add some old-fashioned charm to your barnet. Choose a colour that lifs your complexion for the most flattering effect. The widest and most affordable range I’ve found is from Bow And Crossbones.

Vintage Scarves

I live in these on holiday. They look sweet, stop your scalp getting sunburnt and pull focus from bad hair days. These fifties-print reversible ones from Vicky Cee give you two looks for the price (and suitcase space) of one.

P.S. I love parasols

Just the ticket if you’re anxious to preserve a porcelain complexion.

vintage parasols

Make like Dita and carry a ladylike parasol. As well as looking fabulous it will stop your immaculate vintage make-up sliding straight off your shiny, sweaty, sun-snogged face.

Now all you need to do is practice your pout and wait for a passing photographer to capture all your delightful cheekiness. Happy posing, pin up queens!

The Collectif Dolores Dress

Collectif Dolores dress in blue hibiscus Roxy Vintage Style

Dress from Collectif, shoes from New Look, handbag vintage from Beyond Retro, corsage from Accessorize

My latest wardrobe obsession is this Collectif Dolores dress. I’ve been a fan of Collectif for a while but the Dolores turned me into a devotee. I am so in love with this dress I have to stop myself from hugging it. Mainly because I don’t want to get make-up all over it.

The bright blue hibiscus print is ideal for holidays and heatwaves but what makes this dress really special is the cut. The sweetheart neckline shows a glimpse, not a yard, of cleavage and, perhaps most miraculously of all, doesn’t slip down throughout the day. It’s always distressing when you realise that after leaving the house looking demure, one tube ride later you’re flashing your bra to the world. I sized down from a 12 to a 10 and it was a perfect fit, figure-skimming but comfortable.

The Dolores dress makes me feel sexy and feminine, but not overexposed or self-conscious. I love it so much I just wish I could get one in every colour. Luckily for me (and unluckily for my credit card) Collectif have pre-empted my desire…

The Tara Starlet Sundress

18 Jul

roxy-vintage-style-tara-starlet-dress

Dress from Tara Starlet, wedges from New Look, handbag is vintage from Beyond Retro

This stripy sundress is one of my summer favourites. It’s cut generously enough to accommodate my great big bazongas and it includes a matching tie belt so I can still pull my waist in.

The dress is from Tara Starlet, a fabulously named vintage reproduction company. Their style is very forties and fifites. Somehow they manage to be simultaneously more demure and more cutting edge than a lot of other repro brands. Think less cleavage, more florals, but with attitude. I especially love the authenticity of their designs because they look like real vintage treasures.

Sadly, they don’t stock my frock anymore – I bought it many moons ago – but they do have lots of other equally lovely dresses suitable for summertime flouncing. Here are a few of my faves.

One last thing I love about my dress. It’s very Barbie, circa 1959.

Barbie Suburban Shopper

This isn’t the first time I’ve accidentally dressed up as vintage Barbie. Remember this?

But can you blame me for subconsciously wanting to look like the the superdoll of yesteryear? I mean look how fabulous and versatile she is.

I want to be all of these Barbies. Please.

The Collectif Sarong Dress

Dress from Collectif, wedges from New Look (£12!), handbag is vintage from Beyond Retro

Aloha summer sex bombs!

The glorious London heatwave has been a brilliant opportunity to wear all my best vintagey sundresses. This Collectif sarong dress is one of my favourites for holidays and hot nights out. I love the bright pink flowers, the flattering wraparound skirt and the all-important cinch belt. It’s a total feelgood frock.

Sarong dresses were a huge trend in the forties and fifites, made popular by film stars like Dorothy Lamour.

Dorothy Lamour

And designers like Alfred Shaheen.

alfred-shaheen

Characterised by their exotic prints, vibrant colours and gorgeous waterfall cuts, the dresses are summery, sexy and have bags of wow factor. Accessorise with wedges, bamboo jewellery and a big fuck-off tropical cocktail.

My pink hibiscus number sadly isn’t in stock at the moment but you can stop sobbing because they still have it in a beautiful aqua and a heavenly ivory.

Collectif sarong dresses

Collectif really do excel at producing fabulous Hawaiian inspired styles. Check out this stunning Tiki dress in leopard print and charcoal hibiscus.

Roxy Vintage Style red Esther Williams swimsuit

Swimsuit from For Luna

As some of you may know I have a weakness for vintage swimwear. This little red one-piece is my latest fix. It’s made by a company called Esther Williams, named after the aquatic movie star of the 1950s.

Esther Williams Dangerous When Wet

The best thing about Esther Williams’ gorgeous one-pieces is that they’re exceptionally supportive, like your best friend in swimsuit form. The thick halterneck straps successfully hoist up even my boobs, which are heavier than bowling balls, without squishing. The wonderfully vague ruching disguises any tummy issues so people won’t be able to tell if you’ve got a spare tyre or just enjoy charmingly draped fabric.

I love solid colours because they are so flattering but this swimsuit also comes in some delightful vintage prints.

I already have cherries.

My Vintage Love Story

10 Jul

vintage love story

How I fell hard for vintage style.

When I was a little girl there was no bigger adventure than my mum’s wardrobe. When she went out my heart stopped for a moment. I’m sure hers would have too if she’d known what I was up to. I would lose myself in a fantasyland of frocks and furs. Wearing vintage as an adult inspires the same childlike joy, only now I get to wear the clothes out of the house.

I haven’t always worn vintage. Sadly, my mother didn’t dress me in Victorian christening gowns.

Victorian baby

(Not me.)

I have always been obsessive about clothes though. In the past those obsessions were often misguided. During high school I went through a bejewelled jeans phase. Every day I would wear a different pair of spangle-encrusted denims. I wonder where I got that idea.

b_witched

Now I own one pair of jeans, which I only take out of the wardrobe when I want to feel really bad about myself.

The vintage wardrobe takeover happened gradually. Over time I started to understand what looked good and what looked horrific on my sartorially challenged body.

I guess TV taught me how to dress.

Like a million other women, I idolised the clothes in Sex and The City, especially those worn by Carrie and Charlotte.

Carrie and Charlotte in prom dresses

I loved Carrie’s prom dresses and found her thrift store meets designer wardrobe hugely inspiring. Equally besotted with Charlotte’s fifties-flavoured fashion, I began to hunt for similar styles.

I was also a Trinny & Susannah devotee.

trinny-and-susannah

I found the emotional journey of a woman gaining confidence through pretty clothes far more gripping than X Factor. Every episode would end in me sobbing over the transformative nature of shopping. I lapped up all their advice and still follow their guidelines now. My bookshelf includes every one of their style manuals and I can quote from their Body Shape Bible. Does that mean fashion is my religion?

They confirmed my suspicions that old-fashioned tailoring was the best way to make my big bones an asset. Piece by piece, the studded jeans and glittery vest tops were replaced by pencil skirts, prom dresses and fitted cardigans. And so the fifties colonised my wardrobe.

As my vintage obsession grew, I began watching old movies and studying photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren. I saw how their clothes worked with their bodies and excitedly realised the same styles might look good on mine.

1950s film star fashion

God, it’s a relief to finally have an understanding of how to dress flatteringly. My self-esteem has always been fragile and honestly I’m very insecure. That’s why I’ve built a website and filled it with pictures of me pouting.

A Bargain 50s Circle Skirt

5 Jul

Roxy Vintage Style 50s Hell Bunny floral skirt

Top from Collectif, skirt from Hell Bunny, shoes from New Look, bag from River Island

A 1950s circle skirt is one of those vintage essentials for summertime dressing. Ideal holidaywear, it’s comfortable in warm weather and instantly puts you in the mood for a picnic.

This one is from rockabilly brand, Hell Bunny, and only cost £27.50. Hell Bunny goes up to a size 20, so plus size babes can enjoy the retro glamour too. They sell a matching cropped bodice for those who are particularly proud of their stomachs, like this lady.

Hell Bunny Cannes outfit

As I’m way too bulgey for a bralet, I wear mine with a gypsy top of standard length. I keep it figure-skimming to avoid looking like a Cath Kidston tent. Although if I was to look like a tent, a nice floral Cath dome would be my choice.

To make sure the waistband of your skirt is as fitted as possible, check the size guide before you buy. Too loose and you’ll lose that lovely 50s princessy silhouette. If you really want to feel like you live in a fairytale, get a frothy petticoat to wear underneath.

Here are some other Hell Bunny beauties I’ve got my greedy eye on. Warning, these skirts may cause spontaneous twirling.

All About Joan

3 Jul

It’s not a girl crush. It’s a one woman obsession, revolving mainly around her wardrobe. Season 6 of Mad Men gave us lots of fabulous Joanie moments and a few worrying ones too. Here’s an outfit by outfit account on what Joan wore in 1968.

Her photo shoot look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple waistcoat

The series premiere features Joan in a waistcoat suit and frilly shirt. I am not amused. In fact I’m terrified. Double breastedness inflates breasts that are already huge, the blouse looks like seventies fancy dress and it’s not even a pencil skirt, it’s an A-line. From a storytelling perspective, I get what costume sorceress Janie Bryant is doing. The outfit is about Joan’s new position as a partner. It’s more authoritative and menswear-inspired than her usual sheath dresses and the symbolically secretarial gold pen necklace has gone for good. From a fan’s perspective though, this is the first outfit I’ve ever seen Joan in that I have no desire to wear.

Her air hostess look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 air hostess

And this is the second. When odious Herb visits her office, Joan is wearing a navy tabard and a fussy orange blouse. This is a much looser silhouette than we’re used to on Joan and, dare I say it, she looks a tad frumpy. She’s even wearing her glasses on a chain round her neck like a middle-aged school marm. Janie, what the heck have you done to Joanie??

Her career woman dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 navy wool dress

This is more like it. Joan’s navy boiled wool dress and matching coat look expensive and chic. To her friend, Kate, she appears awe-inspiringly successful, even if her coworkers still treat her like a secretary/whore.

Her day-to-night dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 blue dress

This watercolour silk chiffon dress is a much softer look. The frock is flouncily old-fashioned but she still looks beautiful. I have to include a picture of her perfectly coordinating coat, which we get a glimpse of in the taxi.

Joan Mad Men coat

Her serious suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 black suit

This is what Joan wears when she knows she has a challenging meeting that day. I love the leopard print scarf she’s tied to her handbag. Even when she’s being sombre, she still finds a way to showcase her Joanie flair.

Her awards ceremony gown

Joan Mad Men Season 6 goddess gown

“This is a Greek goddess vintage gown, and I always think of Joan as being a goddess,” explains Janie. This outfit really reminds me of the old school Hollywood glamour of Elizabeth Taylor. I love the chandelier earrings, the lavish beading and the gorgeous jewel colour. She looks sensational.

Her sympathetic vestdress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 brown tabard

I’m not at all convinced by Joan’s new tabard fetish, but at least this one’s not double breasted.

Her weekend office wear

Joan Mad Men Season 6 floral shirt

This is what she wears for a Saturday meeting. The brown pencil skirt and printed silk blouse are a more relaxed version of her usual office attire. Her hair reminds me of Farrah Fawcett’s 70s flicks – for once, Joan is ahead of the trends!

Her girly dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 acorn dress

A repeat from last season, this dress is extra feminine with its adorable acorn print and the cute little red bows on the trim.

Her outraged dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 teal dress

In one of her most emotional scenes ever, Joan wears this teal shirtdress. The colour and shape are strong and almost workmanlike but it also has a secretarial feel to it, reflecting her vulnerability. It’s a fashion callback to the dress she wore when she was made partner, reminding us of what she’s been through to get to this point.

Joan Mad Men teal dress

Her  getting things sorted suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 blue suit

This royal blue crepe suit is appropriately assertive for a scene where she’s organising everyone in the office. The paisley blouse and butterfly brooch are on trend for the 1968 hippy look. Although the hippies probably wouldn’t have teamed their boho accessories with a business suit.

Her queasy look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green coat

Her coat is an appropriately sickly shade of green. Note how the electric blue shoes are the exact same shade as her suit. Joan is always perfectly coordinated, even in A&E.

Her ill at home look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 kimono

We’ve seen this kimono before. It’s her emergency dressing gown whether she’s nursing her kid or herself.

Her tough decisions suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green waistcoat

A vest suit and a fussy blouse. This look encapsulates all my least favourite aspects of Joan’s style this season.

Her summer office outfit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple dress

But this stunning ensemble totally makes up for it. Although it looks like a dress, this is actually a two-piece. The strong cardinal purple is classic Joan. She nearly always wears solid jewel tones that reflect her strength and ensure she stands out onscreen.

Her beach look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 beach look

Love love love Joan’s casual seaside look. It’s very nautically themed, right down to the anchor print drawstring bag and the patriotic scarf in her hair. “This is so what Joan would wear to the beach,” says Janie. “It’s knitwear and shapely and sexy. Then, I designed and built her capri pants. She wore espadrilles. You can’t see it, but she had a very sexy one-piece bathing suit underneath.” I just wish we’d got to see Joan rocking her swimsuit.

Her “I went to the beach yesterday” look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 tropical suit

The tropical pattern on this vintage suit reminds Roger that she spent yesterday at the beach with another man. The colours are stunning, especially with Joan’s rosy sun-kissed complexion.

Her lunch date dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 date dress

This is an unusual office look for Joan because she thinks she’s going on a date. The pale floral chiffon and that great big ruffle at her shoulder make her look extra romantic and feminine.

Her favourite PJs

Joan Mad Men Season 6 PJs

We’ve seen Joan in these stripey pyjamas loads of times when she’s home alone. I really enjoy the way they repeat outfits for the characters on Mad Men because it makes them seem so much more realistic.

Her Avon suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 Avon suit

This is classic Joan remixed for an important meeting. It’s got her hallmarks of a solid colour and an hourglass silhouette, but it’s a suit so it looks more professional. She even has a slimline briefcase which matches her handbag exactly. Love this look.

 Her aftermath dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 navy bow dress

This block colour dress is a callback to her days as a secretary, making it a great choice for the scene where Pete tells her off. She wouldn’t have looked anywhere near as vulnerable in a power suit.

Her standout suit dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 strawberry suit

Janie redesigned this vintage suit and altered its fit and detailing. She added the neck scarf, which has been a Joan trademark since the beginning. “Men love scarves” is one of her fundamental rules of dressing.

Her purple power suit

Joan Mad Men Season 6 purple suit

We only get to see this suit for a moment but I really like it – the colour, the fit, the femininity. As the season goes on Joan seems to get the hang of dressing the part of the successful business woman without losing her unique style and personality.

Her autumnal office wear

Joan Mad Men Season 6 fall

Another themed outfit. It’s Thanksgiving so she’s in a vintage pumpkin blouse and a burnt orange pencil skirt. No detail is overlooked here – the bow on the gift from Bob even matches her green and gold charm bracelet.

Her femme fatale look

Joan Mad Men Season 6 leopard blouse

One of my all-time favourite Joanie moments. I’m pining for this pussybow leopard print blouse. This outfit reminds me of the episode in Season 1 when she’s getting ready for a night on the town with her roommate and she’s feeling too Doris Day. “What I want to be is Kim Novak in just about anything.”

Kim Novak leopard print

Mission accomplished.

Her Thanksgiving dress

Joan Mad Men Season 6 green dress

This gorgeous forest green dress continues the autumnal colour scheme of the final episode. It’s a much more relaxed silhouette for Joan, whose clothes usually hug her tightly, and her hair is loose. She still looks strong and feminine but more natural – an earthy goddess rather than a constructed one. Always a fan of a themed look, Joan’s finished off her Thanksgiving look with a giant box of cranberry sauce. On that note, I would like to give thanks for Joanie’s amazing wardrobe.

What was your favourite Joan look this season?

Introducing Aliya.J

1 Jul

Aliya.J logo

I was very excited when the gorgeous website, Aliya.J, sent me a selection of their lovely stock to review. The online boutique carries a range of vintage-inspired labels including Emmy, Libby London and Darling. Coincidentally, these were all very popular baby names last year.

As one of my discerning and frankly marvellous readers, you’ve earned yourself 20% off all of their full price items. The secret password to enter at the checkout is ROXY20. Use it wisely, my fashion-loving friends. Also FYI there’s a huge summer sale going on right now so make sure you check out their site after checking out this post.

So, let’s get to the clothes. Here’s what they sent and what I thought.

The Emmy Garter Denim 50s Trousers

Roxy Vintage Style denim 1950s jeans by Emmy

I haven’t felt good in a pair of jeans since I was 14 and a size 10. Even then I was probably kidding myself. But these sailor-style retro trews are way more fabulous than flabulous. Normally I never feel properly contained by a pair of jeans. My big ass, thighs of thunder and unruly stomach are all constantly making a bid for freedom. But the high-waist and generous fit mean everything stays where it should. High waistlines also have magical leg-lengthening properties, which I capitalise on with some peeptoe wedges. Having two separate lower limbs as opposed to my usual lone pencil-skirted wiggle stump is very liberating. I attempt a celebratory high kick and topple over on my wedges. Oh well, at least I don’t have to worry about flashing anyone my massive knickers.

The Fever Costa Rica Wrap Dress

Roxy Vintage Style Fever Costa Rica Wrap Dress

Cobalt blue and fuschia are two of my favourite colours and I love that this dress is summery without being too revealing. The elbow-length sleeves and knee-length skirt keep the fleshy upper parts of my limbs covered, which is always a relief. Best of all is the matching slip that’s attached to the dress. I have several wrap dresses but always have to either wear a vest underneath, which gives me pesky VVL (Visible Vest Lines), or do a bit of safety pin based first aid. Not so in this baby. What a thoughtful and ingenious design feature.

The Libby London Mirren Dress

Roxy Vintage Style Libby London Mirren dress

The sailor neckline is adorable and I’m always a fan of black with a touch of boudoir pink. It’s a bit too boobalicious for me but it would look stunning on anyone with smaller than G for Ginormous boobettes. In fact, on a more modestly-chested lady I think this would look very sophisticated and demurely sexy. Shame I look like tits on toast.

The Fever Elson Black Dress

Roxy Vintage Style Fever Elson dress

This lovely LBD is made of a fasntastically flattering fabric that’s supportive without being clingy. I like the versatility of this dress too. You could completely change the look of it with statement jewellery or a contrasting belt. As you can see, it put me in a super mood.

The Emmy Short Sleeve Red Blouse

Roxy Vintage Style Emmy short sleeve red blouse

Lastly is this delightfully ditsy print top, which made me feel very Blitz chic, especially when I teamed it with my tan pencil skirt and vintage handbag. I’m normally addicted to the 1950s but I love how ladylike this more 40s-inspired look is. It makes me want to send a telegram immediately. Definitely worth your ration coupons.
